Wedding favors are intended to show guests you appreciate their presence. That means homemade ideas could be well-reveived as they took more time and effort.

If you want to learn how to make wedding favors, you'll find some tips below.

Your Own Potpourri

Potpourri is a good option. You can even make your own. Below is a list of what you'll need:

  • Bowl (made from any material except metal)
  • Mortar and pestle (used in the kitchen for grinding up spices)
  • Fixative (oak chips, moss, any ingredient that will absorb the oils)
  • Filler (herbs, dried flowers, ingredients for color and scent)
  • Essential Oil (the main smell of the potpourri – vanilla and lavender are popular choices)

Use the mortar and pestle to break down the filler ingredients to smaller sizes and to begin releasing their scents. Combine these with the fixative ingredient in the bowl and add the essential oil. Mix everything together and store it in an air tight container until you start creating the packets for your guests.

If you want to know how to make wedding favors look more professional, here's a tip: wrap them in delicate fabric, such as tulle, which is available at most craft stores. Tie the packets with ribbon (also available at those craft stores) and you have an example of great homemade wedding favor ideas.

Homemade Candies

When you think about making your own wedding favors, candy is one of the easiest choices. Go to your local baking supply store. Most of these stores sell candy molds in a wide range of designs. Find the molds designed specifically for candy lollipops (they have a place for the sticks built into the mold). You'll also want to purchase the sticks. Next, you'll need to purchase the clear plastic wrap and chocolate from the supermarket.

A few days before the wedding, start melting the chocolate. You can use the microwave or a makeshift double boiler (a glass bowl placed over boiling water on the stove works well). Keep stirring the chocolate as it melts. Fill the molds and add the sticks then pop them in the freezer. They become solid in seconds.

Remove the lollipops from the molds and wrap them in the plastic wrap. Place in another container and return to the freezer so they don't melt. Then pass them out to each guest or have a lollipop tree in the center of each reception table.

Paper Fans for a Summer Wedding

If you need more advice on how to make wedding favors, here's another suggestion: paper fans. While they may not look expensive, they can be very practical for outdoor or summer weddings. They are also very simple to make. Here's what you'll need:

  • Card Stock Paper
  • Pattern (whatever shape you choose)
  • Glue
  • Paint Sticks
  • Ribbon

First, you need to prepare the paper. You can have images printed on the paper or you can print a message on each sheet if you want. The choice is yours. However, once the paper is ready, you'll need to cut it out in the shape of your pattern, such as a heart, a butterfly, a wedding bell, or any number of other designs. Second, glue the paint stick to the paper. Let it dry then decorate the stick with the ribbon. Repeat once for each guest and you'll be done making your own wedding favors.
