The key to a successful celebration on a holiday is to make sure that guests don’t feel they’re missing out by attending the wedding. This can be avoided by including pieces of traditional Independence Day flair to your event, which will make the day special for both you and your guests. Because of the day, an outdoor reception under a tent would make the best use of the activities going on already. Just make sure you rent some fans for the tent if you live somewhere especially hot!
Wedding colors, mostly used in the reception décor, are easy to choose for a July fourth event: red, white and blue.
For a more subtle approach to the combination, the white can be the wedding dress, and the tables, chairs, and reception area can be both red and blue. Or, fully embrace the holiday and go with red, white and blue checkered material throughout the rented tent. Either way is both fun and appropriate for the day. Just, for your attendants’ sakes, don’t have red, white and blue-checkered dresses!
Traditional American Independence Day food includes anything that can be grilled outside. For a wedding, use higher quality versions of hot dogs and hamburgers, and go for cheese-filled sausages and patties served on melamine “paper” plates. You will still get a cookout feel, but the special touches will set your cookout apart from a thrown-together backyard fourth of July. (Tip: Make sure the grill is set outside the tent, for proper ventilation.)
After serving the high-class cookout food, invite guests to come outside and watch the local fireworks going off. Depending on the time and location of your reception, it’s likely that there will be some going off around you, but if not, have experienced friends or family members do a mini-fireworks display. It will impress and entertain guests, while also letting them know that the evening is coming to a close. (Tip: Check your local laws to make sure that fireworks can be used in your area.)
Fun and functional favors for the event are sparklers. These can be handed out right before the new couple leaves the party. The couple leaving with sparklers on both sides of them makes for a fantastic photo op and an exciting end of the night for your guests.
